The Liverpool AI ecosystem in 2026: a who's who

A practical map of who is doing what in Liverpool AI in 2026 — the universities, the public-sector programmes, the labs, the events and the operators. Links to everyone that matters.

The Liverpool AI ecosystem in 2026: a who's who

If you are trying to understand who actually does what in Liverpool's AI scene, the information is scattered across university department pages, combined-authority press releases and event listings. This is our attempt at a single, honest map — updated as the picture changes.

We are a Liverpool-based AI consultancy, so we sit inside this ecosystem rather than above it. We have tried to be even-handed and to link directly to each organisation so you can go to the source. If we have missed someone who belongs here, tell us and we will add them.

The universities

The academic side is the deepest and oldest part of Liverpool's AI landscape.

  • University of Liverpool — Department of Computer Science. One of the UK's longer-established AI research groups, with strength in autonomous systems, verification, agents and machine learning. See the Artificial Intelligence research section and the undergraduate Artificial Intelligence BSc.
  • University of Liverpool — AI for Life. A research frontier applying AI to health, sustainability and society. Worth knowing if your interest is applied, impact-driven AI.
  • University of Liverpool — online AI MSc. A steady pipeline of postgraduate AI talent, much of it studying part-time while working.
  • Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Active in applied computing, data science and AI across its School of Computer Science and Mathematics — often the source of more vocationally-minded graduates.

For employers, the practical takeaway: the city produces a real flow of AI graduates, but the senior, production-grade engineers are scarcer — a point we make in our field guide to the state of AI in Liverpool.

The public sector and funding

  • Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA) — AI & Data. The flagship public programme driving regional AI and data investment, skills and innovation funding. If you are an LCR business, this is the route to public-sector support. See their AI & Data hub.
  • LCRCA AI Task Force. A newer expert advisory group shaping the city region's AI strategy and the role of a regional Chief AI Officer.
  • Liverpool City Region AI Summit. An annual gathering at ACC Liverpool bringing together practitioners, researchers and policymakers — the single best day to understand where regional AI policy is heading.

The places and clusters

  • Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool). The innovation district anchoring much of the city's research and deep-tech activity — universities, hospitals, Sensor City and the wider science estate.
  • Sensor City. A university joint-venture incubator focused on sensor and IoT technology, often adjacent to applied-AI work.
  • The Baltic Triangle. The city's digital and creative cluster — home to a large share of Liverpool's startups, studios and independent software teams, including a good number doing AI-adjacent work.

Industry and labs

  • Kyndryl AI Innovation Lab, Liverpool. Opened in 2025, the lab is one of the most significant recent enterprise-AI investments in the city, with plans to support UK businesses and create a substantial number of AI and tech roles.
  • Liverpool FC + SAS. The football club's partnership with analytics firm SAS to bring AI into fan engagement and performance is one of the most visible commercial AI stories to come out of the city.
  • Independent AI consultancies and studios. A small but growing cluster of commercial teams — ourselves included — building production AI for businesses across Merseyside and the North West. We wrote a buyer's guide to choosing between them.

Where we fit

LiverpoolAI is a commercial AI consultancy: we design, build and ship production AI systems for businesses across the city region. We are not a research lab or a training provider — where those are the better fit, we say so, and we have written about how we differ from the rest of the landscape on our pillar page.

If you are an operator trying to work out where to start, our practical guides may help more than this map:

Keep this list honest

This map is a living document. The Liverpool AI ecosystem is moving quickly — new labs, new programmes, new teams. If your organisation belongs here and is not listed, or if a detail is out of date, let us know and we will update it. We would rather this be the most accurate page on the subject than the most flattering to us.
